3 Simple ways to manage your day

When daily routines are disrupted, schedules are in chaos and stress is super high, good habits and routines are the keys to making the best out of any situation. Here are three simple suggestions from our team at SPU to manage the situation.

1. Use your calendar

Many changes happen at the same time, it might feel that you don’t have the same time available and that hours are passing quickly. A great way for you to fight this is to plan out the day and week by scheduling clear blocks of time for all the activities you want to include in your day.

This might include work and exercise, but also household work like cleaning and cooking. Because you spend a lot of time inside in the same physical space, it gives you an illusion of unlimited time available. Planning out the day in advance will give an overview of how you use your time.

2. Invest in one simple daily task

Set up a calendar reminder for one thing you are going to do every day for the next two weeks. Doing it daily develops a habit. It could be anything you enjoy doing. Think of what would help you most in your current situation.

Here are a few ideas from our coaches:
· moving or exercising for 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes a day
· calling or skyping your loved ones
· cooking healthy food
· play and enjoy life with your kids or pets
· practicing and learning a new skill; arts, music, sports

3. Maintain a continuous sleeping pattern

Not having a fixed schedule makes it easier to snooze in the morning and stay up late in the evening. As with setting up the calendar for the daytime, keeping up with your normal sleeping rhythm makes it easier to maintain your mental and physical energy for the upcoming weeks.

On the other hand, if you know your natural circadian rhythm, now is a great time to follow it. For a natural early bird, it could mean a sleeping pattern from 10 pm to 6 am. For more of a night owl, a pattern from 12 pm to 8 am is natural.
